Butts Mill Farm was established sometime in the 1830's. We understand that the Smith family purchased this tract of land from the State at .50 cents per acre.
The Smith family built a Grist Mill, saw mill and later added a cotton gin. The Grist Mill provided local people a place to have the corn they grew to be ground into corn meal,
flour, grits or the entire cob to be ground into feed for their animal food.
The Butts Mill family bought the farm
around the 1900's and began running the farm at that time, thus the name
Butts Mill Farm has been passed down through the years. Some of the Butts family still live in the community today. The Butts ran the farm until the great flood of the 1940's. At that time the changes in the economy caused the farm to sit idle and then due to the availability of more stores locally the farm was closed.
The mill sat closed for approximately 50 years until it was purchased by Neil and Trish Leichty.
In 1997, Butts Mill Farm hosted its first corporate party and the rest, as they say, is HISTORY. Butts Mill Farm not only is a leader in the State for hosting corporate parties but also is a leader in tourism for the local economy, as well as a premier facilitator for beautiful outdoor weddings.
These are the facts about the history of the farm as we have gathered them from personal conversations with locals, 2 separate local Archives, and of course our own personal experience as the present owners of Butts Mill Farm
